Tips to maintain weight while eating during festivals

Holiday weight gain is a common concern for many people.

Festivals can be some of the best times for people; families and friends get to enjoy in a fun atmosphere. There are plenty of activities to do – everything from concerts to games. But the real star of festivals is the FOOD! Festivals are always full of all kinds of sweets, rarely any of this food is actually healthy for you to consume. That’s actually why festivals are probably held only once or twice a year; that way we don’t gorge ourselves on festival food year around.

There are several ways you can still enjoy the food at holiday celebrations without overeating.


  1. Sweets:

No matter what you are eating, eat small bites, relish the taste, it will last longer and control your urge to take another piece. Try eating homemade laddoos made from jaggery and dry fruits as they control your calorie intake.

  1. Portion control is the key:

Small portions fit in small plates. It is important to keep a check on the quantity of food you consume and your daily calorie intake. Controlling the portion size is the key to weight loss maintainence in festive seasons.

  1. Increase your water intake:

Stay hydrated with low calorie juices, coconut water. Keep water infused with lime, mint, berries, cucumber and any other citrus fruit of your choice and sip throughout the day. Avoid the commercially available so called weight loss drinks, homemade juices are the best alternatives.

  1. Walk when you shop:

Walk off the shopping and trips to the parties. If it is difficult to hit the gym, no worries! Take the stairs, do a couple of stretching exercises at your desk, skipping, the list is endless!

  1. Restrict the amount of sugar and salt intake:

High salt intake may cause swelling, puffiness and water retention in the body and in lower extremities.

You want to make sure to eat foods high in protein and fiber like beans, legumes, and nuts. These will keep you satiated longer and help you digest your food properly. They are also great sources of energy that are metabolized slower than carbs. They will help you be able to be active during the festival without feeling tired and sleepy.
